Hodogaya Tokaido inn town was where is just a block or two from JR Hodogaya station.
Before entering Hodogaya inn town, there is a crossroad(追分: Oiwake, meaning crossroad) we will pass by. The road on the left is Tokaido, and the one on the right is old Hachioji Kaido. There is a sign at the corner of the house between these two roads.
The next street view is where the east end of Hodogaya inn town used to be, called Edogata-Mitsuke(江戸方見附). Mitsuke in the context of Kaido inn towns is basically a watchtower or guards to ensure the security of inn town. There are usually two Mitsuke: one toward Edo, the other toward Kyoto.
Tokaido goes under Sotesu line Tennocho station, then bears left and merge to a big road. Right before merging point, there is a monument of old Katabira bridge, where the bridge used to be prior to 1965. Today, Katabira River runs on north side of Tennocho station. Prior to that, the river was right underneath the monument.(See the picture below)
Then we pass by Koshoin temple. Koshoin used to have a Terakoya, which was a school provide basic education for kids during Edo period.
Then we pass by former cargo terminal, Kosatsuba the information board, then we will see signposts for Kamakura and Kanazawa. Note that here, Kanazawa is not the one you imagine about gold crafts in a big city close to Noto peninsula. There is another Kanazawa in south of Yokohama.
Well get side tracked back to Koshoin temple. There is Kenkoin temple next to it, then between Kenkoin and Dairenji temple, there is a winding road. Apparently this road is a part of pre-Edo period Tokaido called Ko-Tokaido(古東海道).
Apart from Ko-Tokaido, there was an ancient route called Kodai-Tokaido(古代東海道), which goes back to 700-800s.
This is where the Honjin VIP inn was located. You will see the sign and the gate. Some blogs indicate that the gate, the warehouse and the signpost are of Edo period, But everything else looks built in 1900s.
One of very few things that is worth being checked out is Hatago Honkanekoya inn building, built in 1869. As mentioned in Kaido 101, this is equivalent to modern-day business hotels. Some of blogs indicate that there are still residents, some other blogs say that nobody is living. In any case, this does not seem to be open to public.
Near this old inn, there is Daisenji temple. This temple was established in 970, and the oldest temple in this area.
Toward the end of inn town, there is a milestone called Ichirizuka(一里塚). You will see Ichirizuka not only all over Tokaido, but also basically all over any Kaido.while many of them have already destroyed for many reasons, Yokohama city restored this particular Ichirizuka milestone as well as pine tree street. Pine trees were planted as a guide of Tokaido route.
There are very few info in English and any other languages regarding each Tokaido inn towns. But Hodogaya has one English page about slopes in Tokaido Hodogaya inn town.
The access to Hodogaya in town has several ways.
JR Hodogaya station
Sotetsu Nishi Yokohama station
Sotetsu Tennocho station.
Note that JR Tokaido/Ueno-Tokyo line do not stop at Hodogaya.
