Take a break: how to find Mt.Fuji view spots

Just want to let you know that, if you are a first timer to Japan and considers seeing Mt.Fuji for a day trip, check out the map.

Just in case your private tour is cancelled, when weather permits, other than famous Fujiyoshida/Kawaguchiko area, there are plenty of places you can just hop on a train and go see Mt.Fuji.

I colored yellow on the map roughly where you can see Mt.Fuji. Note that even outside areas I marked, there are plenty of spots where you can see Mt.Fuji. Also note that parts of west of Mt.Fuji have disadvantages due to high mountains such as Minobu, but if you hike up to the peak or on western side of Fuji river, you have better chance to see Mt.Fuji.

South of Izu peninsula has disadvantages due to mountain ranges of Amagi.

East of Mt.Fuji where you can see Mt.Fuji. This is not a perfect guide as there are many spots on the map outside yellow parts that you can see Mt.Fuji.

Tokyo area where you can see Mt.Fuji. Tokyo area is tricky as there are many skyscrapers and tall buildings that block the view of Mt.Fuji. Follow local websites’ recommendations, or go on observation decks of tall buildings such as Shibuya Sky, Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Metropolitan government building, Yokohama Landmark Tower etc.
West of Mt.Fuji view spots. If you are in eastern Yaizu for example, Mt.Fuji view is blocked by Mt.Hanazawa and Mt.Manganho.

According to local weather stations, average days of seeing Mt.Fuji from the bottom to the top, at some point of the day, are 150-160 days, and the time wise, the highest possibility is 8 am. North side tends to be clearer than south side due to low humidity. Season wise, the odd is significantly lower during summer, and higher during winter.

My favorite locations for seeing Mt.Fuji are:

1) Mishima: bottom is partially blocked by Mt.Ashitaka but it’s right there from the Shinkansen station. My daughter and I were satisfied.

2) Fuji city: you can see Mt.Fuji straight from the bottom by the Shinkansen station, Tagonoura, Fujikawa(there are JR stations)

3) Fujinomiya: another great place like Fuji city (on JR Minobu line)

4) Gotemba: can see Mt.Fuji straight from the bottom. There is a JR station, and there is a Odakyu express straight from Shinjuku to Gotemba

5) Numazu:partially blocked by Mt. Ashitaka but has a good view.

6) Enoshima: The beach in front of Shin-Enoshima aquarium has a majestic view of Mt.Fuji over the coastline.

Places such as Mishima, Fuji, Shizuoka, Fujisawa, Fujinomiya, Matsuda, Kamakura, Ashigara, Fujikawaguchiko, Kofu, have JR stations and with Shinkansen and/or Odakyu, these are easily accessible.

These are places I have been, for private, family and business trips.

Shizuoka city: downtown Shizuoka, Toro ruins museum, Miho no Matsubara, IAI Stadium Nihondaira.

Fujinomiya: Taisekiji temple, JR Fujinomiya station, JR Minobu line.

Mishima: JR Mishima station western edge of Shinkansen platform, downtown Mishima.

Fuji city: JR Shin Fuji station, JR Minobu line, JR Tokaido line.

Fujisawa: Enoshima, Katase beach.

Yaizu: Yaizu port.

Kakegawa: Kakegawa castle.

Omaezaki: East of Omaezaki cape.

Makinohara: Tomei Highway Makinohara SA.

The picture below is Mt.Fuji from Katase beach by Shin Enoshima aquarium, Fujisawa city, captured by me, in May 2024, around 9 am.

The bottom line is that, if you just want to see, Mt.Fuji is ALWAYS RIGHT THERE FOR FREE!
